This Sat., Nov. 17, at the SHU Field House, the Siena Heights University (SHU) men’s and women’s basketball teams will tip off the 8thAnnual Food Drive to benefit the Daily Bread soup kitchen and food pantry in Adrian, Mich. The Saints will play Aquinas College in “A Hunger Game”, starting with the women’s game at 1p.m. followed by the men’s game at 3p.m.
The admission is free to those who come with a cash or food donation.SAAB, an SHU organization that represents all the student athletes, will be helping out during the game by having different activities to get the students excited about the game. They will have a 50/50 raffle, with half of the proceeds going to the Daily Bread, and a free-throw shooting contest to also raise money.
At half-time they will introduce Ken Freshcorn and Rhonda Clark, representatives from the Daily Bread. Zak Krug, an executive member of SAAB says, “We are really excited about helping out with such a good cause for the Daily Bread and we look forward to partnering up with Professor Lindstom and the social psychology class to create an awesome event!”
Orange, the color of hunger awareness, is the adopted spirit color for the game. Orange shirts will be worn by the athletes during warm-up and encouraged to be worn by those attending the game. The cheerleaders and the dance squad will also be wearing orange ribbons in their hair.
The Food Drive has been a project of Professor Jeff Lindstrom’s social psychology class to raise awareness of hunger in the area and to bring the University together with the community to help the local people in need The Food Drive will take place on the SHU campus from November 26-30 with drop-off boxes in every building on campus.
“This is the first time we will have the SHU athletics involved in the Food Drive,” Lindstrom explained. “It’s a great way to get the students around campus to be a part of our efforts to help the Daily Bread.”
