RECIPE: Apple Pie
Look, there is no wrong way to make an apple pie. It’s sugar, apples, cinnamon and dough. Where can you go wrong? So, this is my way of making an apple pie, and I’ll let you in on some tips that my mom and I had to learn the hard way as we made the pie.
Tips:
- MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE INGREDIENTS BEFORE YOU START ANYTHING ELSE.
- When you take the pie out of the oven, let it cool off for a while. Otherwise, you will get apple pie soup. It’ll still be very good, but you know, soup.
- Make sure you have ice cream or whip cream for when you do eat it.
- Put the actual pie pan on another pan to bake. Otherwise, you will have a mess to clean up. Apple pie is amazing and arguably the best pie, but it is not the cleanest.
- Apple pie for breakfast is the best.
- Gala and Fuji apples are the best in my opinion. They are great for baking and eating. Some people like other apples, but these are what I use. But if you use the same kind of apple, they cook evenly. But what apple you use makes a huge difference. DON’T use a soft apple, then you’re eating apple sauce at that point.
- Now…the debate is, white or brown sugar, it’s up to you
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, or whatever, use whatever.
- I have a secret: the juice of one fresh lemon balances everything out very nicely.
- Some things are better to do with one another person, this is one of them. Thank me later.
Baking times:
- Preheat over 425 for a half hour.
- Once that is done, knock it down to 375 and bake for 45 minutes to a 1 hour.
- You want to hear the apple pie sizzle and boil. You think that you’ve burned it, you haven’t.
- After the first half hour, cover it with aluminum foil to make yourself feel better. And so that the top doesn’t get to brown.
Ingredients:
- Enough apples to be a mound, peeled, cut in apple slice chunks, about 1 inch.
- Juice of one lemon. You’re welcome.
- ½ cup sugar (white or brown, whatever you want)
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon (or nutmeg and ginger to taste)
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of flour
- I have made crust; I have watched many people in my life make curst. I have decided I am not one of those women because I am not retired and do not have the time. So, your favorite store-bought crust will do.
- 1 egg, whisked. With a splash of water to make an egg wash.
- Decorative sugar (optional).
Steps:
- Mentally prepare yourself.
- Make sure you have all the ingredients.
- Peel, core and cut apples. Some people like the peels.
- Put all the cored, peeled and cut (aka naked) apples in a large bowl.
- Put your flour, sugar, spice, lemon juice and pride in the bowl. Mix thoroughly.
- Take one pie crust, line the 9-inch pie pan with it. If you get a bigger pie pan, get more crust and more apples.
- Pour apple mixture into pie dish. Make it into an apple mountain.
- Cut and place the 4 tablespoons of butter on top of the apples. If you forget to do this, you will have to lift pie crust.
- Place pie crust on top and cut four even lines in it. Those lines let air out and they look pretty.
- Cover the pie evenly in the egg wash and sprinkle the decorative sugar.
- Let cool for a while and enjoy with some ice cream or whip cream!
