Centennial Edition: History of SHU Football

While visiting the Legacy Room, I was amazed at all the things Siena has done since the school has been open.

One thing that stood out to me was how the football program came about. After having a huge press conference, Siena Heights University announced they were starting a football program and the program will be ready to play fall 2011.

Siena President Sister Peg Albert made the announcement at a press conference on May 3, 2010.

The decision to explore football was a very comprehensive and collaborative effort. Sister Peg asked if football fit the mission of Siena Heights, because it is not just about the athletics, but expanding the mission of this institution. She believed that football will not only give opportunities to a new group of students at Siena Heights, but will build community.

SHU built an on-campus stadium for the team before the start of the 2011 season. In only four seasons, Siena won their first conference championship in 2014.

This year will make the ninth year the football program has been open. The team continue to break records and keep a great Legacy going.
