With the new McLaughlin University Center in the final stages of construction, it’s time to make decorating decisions – refining interior color schemes, choosing trim, flooring, shades, and finally the style of furniture. Since November 2012 Siena Heights University (SHU) President Sister Peg Albert, Lee Johnson, senior vice president for business and finance and Michael Orlando, dean of students, have been working with American Interiors in Toledo, Ohio, to learn about the latest furniture trends. The goal has been to find quality, comfortable furniture while, at the same time, staying within the university’s budget.
Orlando first met with Charity Hogrefe, American Interiors Executive Designer, to discuss layout and furniture for student dining, public safety, student life and the lounge areas. Orlando then met with SHU’s student focus group to get their input. Based on the responses from the students and directors of the respective areas Albert, Johnson and Orlando began the next step.
In December the interior planning committee met at the American Interiors showroom testing out many different chairs for comfort and style, while also considering what materials would hold up best for long term use. They unanimously agreed that the university colors of blue and gold will be included as part of the new McLaughlin University Center’s color scheme. Bold and colorful accents will be added throughout the building to give it an upbeat and modern twist.
Another planning meeting will take place in February with the interior planning committee finalizing the selection of furniture and place the order.
“Selecting the furniture for the McLaughlin Center with the input of the students and staff members has made me realize just how close we are to opening this building for our community,” Orlando said. “I am thrilled with the fresh furniture designs that bring a great combination of style, durability and comfort to the student experience.”
