Sports Roundup: Week Two
January 18
Women’s Basketball @ Concordia. W 60-55
The Saints won a close conference game on the road as they held off Concordia 60-55. Sharmaine Wills led the team with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals. Also adding 14 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks was April Watson.
Men’s Basketball @ Concordia. W 65-62
The Saints played a close game since the opening tip off and were able to hang on for a 65-62 conference victory over Concordia. Chris Pearl led the team with 15 points while dishing out three assists. Leading the Saints with six rebounds and four blocks was Tony Jackson who also dropped 14 points. Nick Randle contributed 13 points to go with a team-leading four steals and three assists.
January 20
Men’s Volleyball @ Saint Xavier University. W 3-1.
The Saints open their season with a 3-1 victory in four sets over Saint Xavier. The set scores were 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, and 25-22. Matthew Dugan led the team with 14 kills while adding seven digs and four assists. Earning 13 kills and nine digs was John Kalugar. Leading the team in assists and digs were Keegan Crawford and Emilier DeJesus with 38 and 21, respectively.
Women’s Track & Field @ Aquinas Quad Meet #2.
The Saints earned 215 points to cruise to a first-place finish. Sheila McKinley took first in the pole vault with a career best vault of 3.84m to rank her second in the nation. Ashley Russo won the 1000m run with a career best and automatic-qualifying time of 3:00.95, also ranking her second in the nation. Alexis Moore won the 200m run with an automatic-qualifying time of 25.51 seconds and the 400m run with a provisional-qualifying time of 58.88 seconds. Mildrenae Young-Brooks won the triple jump with an automatic-qualifying jump of 11.71m. Winning the high jump with an automatic-qualifying jump of 1.68 meters was Marissa Johnson. Asia Gardner won the 60m dash with a provisional-qualifying time of 7.81 seconds and the long jump with a jump of 5.34m. The 4X400 meter relay team earned first with a provisional-qualifying time of 4:02.63. Ashley O’Neill threw a provisional-qualifying mark of 16.08m to earn first in the weight throw and earned first in the shot put with a throw of 12.67m. Lastly, earning first in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.00 was Mariah Ridal.
Men’s Track & Field @ Aquinas Quad Meet #2.
The Saints earned a convincing 183.5 points to earn a first-place finish. The 4X800 meter relay took first place with an automatic-qualifying time of 7:47.68 seconds. The 4X400 meter relay team also took first place as they finished with a time of 3:24.16 seconds. Jacob Compagner earned first place in the weight throw with an automatic-qualifying throw of 17.82 meters. Earning first in the 1000m run with a provisional-qualifying time of 2:32.26 was Anthony Vermilye. Joshua Jenkins earned first place in the 60m hurdles with an automatic-qualifying time of 8.30 seconds. Stephen Merchant won the mile and the 3000m run with times of 4:32.07 and 9:12.20. Earning first in the 60m dash with a time of 7.11 seconds was Shae McClary. Robert Milton won the 200m dash with a time of 22.84 seconds. Torin Anderson won the 400m dash with a time of 50.62 seconds. Lastly, winning the 800m dash with a time of 1:58.50 was Brent Rodden.
January 21
Men’s Volleyball @ Calumet (Ind.) W 3-0.
The Saints won all three sets against Calumet (Ind.) to improve to 2-0 on the season. Tyler Hubbard-Neil led the team with five kills, nine digs, an ace, and a block. Chris Horner added five kills and two blocks. Tallying 11 assists and four digs was Emilier DeJesus. Keegan Crawford tacked on eight assists and four digs.
Women’s Basketball VS Michigan-Dearborn. W 63-39.
The Saints hung on to their small lead early, cruising to a 63-39 victory over Michigan-Dearborn. April Watson led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Jaaliyah Arrington contributed eight points. Sharmaine Wills tallied seven points and seven rebounds. Avery Chezem contributed seven points and three steals off the bench.
Men’s Basketball VS Michigan-Dearborn. L 66-72.
The Saints lost a nail-bitter as they came up short to Michigan-Dearborn, 66-72. Nick Randle led the team with 22 points and two steals. Jerrell Martin dropped 12 points to go with six rebounds and a block. Tony Jackson led the team with eight boards while Keith Jordan led the team with two blocks off of the bench.
