Saints Sports Roundup: Week One
January 11
Women’s Basketball @ Lourdes. W 68-43
The Saints got off to a hot start and never looked back as they defeated Lourdes 68-43. April Watson led the team with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Ashley Perry added 11 points off of the bench while Sharmaine Wills added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Men’s Basketball @ Lourdes. W 69-61
The Saints were able to hold off Lourdes and hang on for a 69-61 victory on the road. Chris Pearl led the team in scoring with 18 points, while Jerrell Martin added 11 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Josh Winowiecki and Nick Randle dropped 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Women’s Basketball @ Indiana Tech. W 69-64
The Saints won a close one on the road as they held off Indiana Tech 69-64. Leading the team with 18 points was Jaaliyah Arrington, while Sharmaine Wills added 12 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Perry and April Watson both contributed nine points while Watson also led the Saints with nine boards. Demi Russell added 10 points off of the bench.
Men’s Basketball @ Lourdes. L 58-70
The Saints were unable to come up on top on the road as they fell to Indiana Tech, 58-70. Jerrell Martin led the team with 16 points and nine boards while Chris Pearl added 13 points and seven boards. Lavario Smith dropped nine points off of the bench.
Women’s Track & Field @ SVSU Classic
The Saints finished the meet with five first-place finishers. Earning first in the weight throw with a season-best and automatic-qualifying mark of 16.82m was Ashley O’Neill. Tasha and Sheila McKinley tied for first in the pole vault with an auto height of 3.64 meters. Marissa Johnson won high jump with an automatic-qualifying jump of 1.73 meters. Charlena Williams earned first with a provisional-qualifying jump in the triple jump with a distance of 11.10m. Asia Gardner earned first place in the 60-meter dash with a provisional-qualifying time of 7.85 seconds and in the 200-meter dash with an automatic-qualifying time of 25.43 seconds.
Men’s Track & Field @ SVSU Classic
The Saints finished the meet with a total of nine first-place finishers. Brent Rodden earned first in the 600-meter dash with an automatic-qualifying time of 1:20.67. Earning first place in the 800-meter dash, with an automatic-qualifying time of 1:55.04, was Anthony Vermilye. Jacob Compagner threw a provisional-qualifying distance in the weight throw to earn first with a throw of 16.89m. In the 400-meter dash, Torin Anderson took first with a time of 50.46 seconds. Freshman Juwan Willis won the high jump clearing the bar at 1. 98 meters while freshman Shae McClary and Robert Milton won the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 7.08 seconds and 22.47 seconds, respectively. Samuel Parlette came out on top in the 3000 meter run with a time of 8:56.70. Lastly, earning first place by 0.11 seconds on an exciting finish was the 4×400 relay team which consisted of Ryan Dukes, Rodden, William Jackson and Vermilye.
