COMMENTARY: Easy as 1, 2, 3: Three Meals for College Students

If you’re craving something filling and good, but you only have a mini refrigerator and microwave to work with, what do you do?

Many college students rely on meal plans, but sometimes life happens come up and you’re unable to get to the cafeteria in time. I have selected three meals that are easy to make in dorm rooms and tested them out myself. While none of this is healthy by any means, it’s certainly fatty and delicious.

First off is the egg and cheese wrap. It’s perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat before heading off to morning class. All that’s needed is two eggs, two American cheese slices, and one tortilla. I put the eggs into a bowl and whisked it together, then popped it into the microwave for one minute. The time depends on how many watts your microwave has. To be safe, cooking it in increments of 30 seconds is ideal. I put the eggs on top of one tortilla along with the cheese, then put it in the microwave for 40 seconds. Then it was time to eat!

It isn’t the most beautiful dish in the world, that’s for sure. However, the taste is good! The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the cheese was gooey and warm. I definitely wouldn’t mind eating this again.

Next dish is the pizzarito. There is a lot of flexibility with this recipe because everybody likes their pizza differently. The first step is to put either pasta or marinara sauce on top of a tortilla; I used three or four spoon fulls myself. Next, put shredded cheese on top. I mixed mozzarella and cheddar together for a cheesy blend. I chopped up about a fifth of an onion and sprinkled some on top, and then I took deli ham and ripped it apart and distributed it evenly across the pizzarito. I put the concoction into the microwave for a little over a minute altogether, but again, this may differ for everybody.

I didn’t enjoy this as much as the egg and cheese wrap, but it wasn’t all bad. I would personally pay the extra couple of bucks to get an actual pizza delivered.

Last, but not least, cookie in a mug. I was most excited for this recipe, as I’ve seen it many times on the internet with rave reviews. First, get a microwave safe mug and spray it with vegetable oil. I then placed a dollop of butter in the mug and microwaved it for 20 seconds afterwards. I added two table spoons of sugar, ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt into the mug and mixed it all together. Next is to add egg yolk. To separate the yolk from the egg white I cracked the egg in half and transferred the egg whites into the opposing empty shell. Stirring the yolk into the mug, I then added three tablespoons of flour and a handful of chocolate chips. I then cooked it in the microwave for 40 seconds.

It actually looked decent! The top of the cookie was a little mushy, and the bottom of it was a bit too crusty for my liking. However, it was to be expected from microwave cooking.

College can consume a lot of our time and get in the way of meals and eating regularly. These meals I prepared are very simplistic, and can be done by anyone.

While none of these are necessarily healthy options, they do taste good and are strong contenders for late-night study sessions.
