State-Wide Conference Coming to Siena
On April 2, Siena Heights University will host the 2016 Michigan Undergraduate Psychology Research Conference (MUPRC). This state-wide conference is designed to show the research students are performing in their studies.
“It serves as a forum for students to showcase and present their work,” said Jeffrey Lindstrom, head of Siena’s Psychology Department.
Siena Heights is one of the five schools that rotate hosting the conference each year. In his 14 years at Siena, Lindstrom said he has always noticed good student engagement.
“It is an indication of the work students have consistently and steadily completed,” he said.
This conference is not only a great resource to learn about new information, but also a good step for students in professional development, said Lindstrom. This conference will be an all-day ordeal on Saturday. Guests from all over will be presenting, along with roughly 15 students from SHU. Other Siena Heights students will help run and facilitate the event as well.
“It is an invaluable experience, in my opinion. Students are able to receive support and mentorship,” said Lindstrom.
As for the students presenting from Siena, most are seniors. This is a chance for them to present their senior project before they must give their final presentation. However, that does not mean that younger students are not involved.
“It is a good way for juniors to see the level of work required, and it is a helpful tool for students to begin to think about their final project,” Lindstrom said.
The conference will kick off with the keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Williams, professor of Psychology at Brigham Young University. He will be explaining the importance of research.
“He is a wonderful speaker,” Lindstrom said.
Lindstrom said he is pleased to have SHU host the event and that it, “reflects the commitment of the students.”
