Spectra Film Review: THE BOY

Directed By William Brent Bell – PG13 – 95 mins – STX Entertainment – Horror

The idea of a porcelain doll, alive or not, is a sticky scenario anyway you look at it. So the premise of The Boy, one in which an American nanny Greta Evans (Lauren Cohan) travels to the countryside only to find out this new English’s family’s boy is actually a life-sized doll, is quite terrifying, especially when Greta refuses to follow the strict set of rules governed by the boy’s parents, causing weird and disturbing events to occur leaving us to think the doll is actually alive. The script screams Chucky, but really it’s just tailor made for the PG13 youngsters, and screenwriter Stacey Meaner does her best not to give away too much as we progress. The Boy has a terrific third-act conclusion, but sadly forgets it’s purpose along the way, like to actually scare us. Still, I have to commend director William Brent Bell for taking the higher road in actually evolving the story into something worth discussing when The Boy could have easily became the next Annabelle. Here is a perfect example of when the ending can become a movie’s salvation. B-
