The 86th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Nominations for the 88th annual Academy Awards were handed down today with a slew of predicted nominations (The Revenant, Spotlight, The Big Short and Room) while others (Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road) offered a healthy dose of awards conversation. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant led the pack this morning with a staggering 12 nominations (including best picture and actor) – George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road was a close second with 10 nominations including best picture and director (still nothing for Charlize Theron as Furiosa though).

The Martian earned an impressive seven nominations including best picture and actor, yet, surprisingly snubbed long time favorite Ridley Scott (who many analyst had pegged to win). Spotlight received six nods, and The Big Short was nominated for five Oscars.

Inside Out scored (not surprising nods) for best animated feature and original screnplay while The Peanuts Movie is nowhere to be seen. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (although it had been surging as of late) did not meet enough criteria with Academy voters to make the ballot for Best Picture (going for more art fare like Brooklyn instead). Brie Larson snagged a nom for Room while Sylvester Stallone is looking to take home Oscar gold for bringing back one of his most iconic characters, Rocky Balboa in Creed.

Its tough at this time to predict who will take what award home, but, as far as best picture goes..I still think that it’s Spotlight’s to lose. Stay tuned folks as next month I will release my official ballot (predictions) for the Academy Awards. The Oscars are set to be handed out on Feb 28th at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, beginning at 7pm on ABC. The ceremony will be hosted by Chris Rock.
