Saints Sports Roundup: March 18-24
Baseball
This past week the Saints took part in a trio of doubleheaders starting off with their home opener against Madonna. On Wednesday in game one, the Saints gave up an early run at the top of the first to fall behind early, and much of the same continued for the home team. Not allowing another run until the top of the fifth before Madonna went on to explode for the remainder of the game going on to route the Saints 13-0. In game two of the day, the Saints received one run from Drew Milligan’s RBI single. The Saints went on to lose game two 3-1. Pitchers Kyle Kuhr and Tyler Butlin were tacked with the losses.
On Friday the Saints went head to head with conference foe Lourdes at home.It took until inning three for the Saints to hit the scoreboard, with RBIs coming from Milligan and Eric Henderson to lead 2-1. The following inning the Saints added two more and held on to win game one 4-1. In game two the Saints fell behind early in the first trailing 2-0. Throughout the next two innings both team with scoreless. Unable to capitalize throughout, the Saints went on to give up two more runs, dropping game two 4-0.
Saturday set the stage for the Saints rematch against Lourdes at home. This time around, the Saints went on to win both contests 7-0 and 12-3. Thomas McCarter was the hero of game one, pitching a three hit shutout of Lourdes while the Saints went on to score five runs in the opening inning with Carson Wlad going 2-4 with a triple, double, and three RBIs while Austin Hauck added two runs. Game two Milligan took control going a perfect 4-4 from the plate with two doubles, two scores and four RBIs. Kyle Burkholder was the winning pitcher of game two.
Men’s Lacrosse
Sunday the Saints took on Lawrence Tech on the road and were on a roll. Opening the first quarter blanking LaTech 5-0, the Saints kept the charge going ending the first half up 10-2. The second half produced similar numbers, with the Saints tacking on eleven goals while only allowing three going on to route Tech 21-5. Tom Kreitzer led the way with five goals while Brennan Gohr, Shane Lewandowski, Danny Orr, and Nate Woods chipped in three apiece respectively. Goaltender Ryan Mailloux recorded 15 saves through three quarters.
Men’s Volleyball
This past week the Saints traveled to Cincinnati for a pair of games versus Bluefield and Cincinnati Christian. The Saints came away victorious in both matches with 3-0 sweeps of both opponents. Official stats were not recorded for the matches.
Tuesday night the Saints took on Calumet Saint Joseph in their regular season and home finale. Starting out the first set a bit sluggish coupled with a handful of mental errors, the Saints kept it close throughout being tied with the visitors on numerous occasions. Thanks to the digs of Zak Krug, the Saints were able to pull away and take set one 25-20. Set two was much of the same as far as competitive nature. The Saints were on top numerous times leading by as many as six at one time before allowing the visitors to claw back even with them. Max Field was the ace in the hole for set two, hitting on several ace serves and answering the opposition with timely kills to give the Saints set two 25-19. In the third set the Saints got off to a great start of 5-1 thanks again to Field and his ball attacking. Calumet gained control again however, tying and taking a 9-6 lead soon after. After settling in, the Saints were able to match tick for tack leading by one point until it was tied at 25-25. Lance Blough came on with a crucial kill to give them a 27-26 lead and the final blow came from a Calumet error on an attempt to return a rally, giving up set three 28-26 and losing to the Saints 3-0.
Softball
The Saints took to the Diamond for a total of five games starting out on Wednesday against Adrian for a doubleheader. In game one, both teams went scoreless for the opening two innings before the Saints got on the board the bottom of the third with a run. The Saints went on to score another run in the fifth before being tied by the Bulldogs in the top of the sixth. In response, the Saints got a lift from Skylar Crenshaw when she scored on a wild Bulldog pitch to give them a 3-2 lead and eventual game one win. Crenshaw and Kyndle Wolfinger were 2-2 at bat both with a run and a stolen base. In game two the Saints trailed going into the bottom of the opening inning before pulling ahead 2-1, which would ignite a string of six unanswered runs. The Saints went on to win game two 6-1 behind Megan Jones going 2-2 with a double, a run and two RBIs while Kelsie Abbott scored twice.
Saturday the Saints traveled to Chicago, Illinois to take on seventh-ranked Saint Xavier. The Saints in game one played a stellar defensive game, not allowing any runs behind the pitching of Abbott through five and one-half innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Xavier received a double from their at bat, giving them the sole run in the game and a 1-0 win. In game two the Saints trailed 2-0 going into the second inning and were unable to regain composure, giving up another three runs in the third and two more in the final frame to drop game two 7-0.
On Sunday back in Chicago, the Saints took on Robert Morris. through two the score was 0-0, but Abbott had other plans for the Saints. Abbott went on to be the offensive catalyst for the Saints, going 4-5 at the plate including a double, a run along with four RBIs to help the Saints out of a few sticky situations. Tied at 3-3 in the seventh, Abbott’s double in the ninth put the Saints ahead for the win along with Taylor Hayes and her sac fly. Megan Jones batted 3-5 with two doubles as well while Hayes added two RBIs. Abbott was also the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts and 11 hits.
Women’s Lacrosse
Three matches were on the docket for the Saint this past week, starting out on Wednesday against Lawrence Tech at home. After trailing 10-8 at the end of the first half, the Saints were able to rally with a 6-1 run thanks in part to Erin Kehn and Aliisa Mason scoring two goals apiece giving them a 14-11 advantage. The Saints were able to score six goals in the second half while holding Tech to only three, giving them a 14-13 win over the visitors. Kehn led the way with five goals while goalie Tabitha Ferguson recorded 11 saves for the Saints.
Friday Lourdes came to O’Laughlin Stadium and gave the Saints all they could handle. Holding a 4-2 lead at halftime, the Saints would slug through a match which featured seven ties and a second half score deficit of one. Although they lost the half, the Saints were able to hold off Lourdes in part to the go ahead score from Sabrina Snow, one of her three total goals. Kehn and Kayla Parks added two goals apiece as well for the Saints while Ferguson saved seven goals.
Saturday Midland made the trip to Adrian, Michigan to take on the Saints. Led by Kehn and Sam Skodi with seven and three goals respectively, the Saints won both the first and second halves 13-6 and 9-8 to come away with a 22-14 decision and the team’s fourth straight win. Ferguson was the winning goalie with five saves for the Saints Parks dropped in a pair of goals of her own and Sydney VanHoose recorded a trio of assists.
