Saints Sports Roundup: March 11-17
Baseball
The Saints took to the diamond twice last week, starting out against Taylor on the road. After both going scoreless after one, answers were made by both to make it a 1-1 game at the end of the second. The Saints jumped out to a 4-1 lead with solo home runs scored in the third and fifth innings before letting off the gas and allowing the Trojans to have a three-run inning explosion in the eighth. Both teams went scoreless in the ninth and the Saints fell 4-3.
On Saturday the Saints took part in a non-conference doubleheader against Indiana Wesleyan, winning both individual games by a total of 10 runs. In game one the Saints ripped off a four run first inning and never looked back going on to win 9-1. The Saints were led by Austin Hauck who went 4-5 batting with a run scored. In game two, the Saints waited for their runs until the third inning, producing three. The Saints tacked on another in the sixth before IU decided to answer with run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings.
Men’s Lacrosse
The Saints took to the field twice this past week, first hosting Indiana Tech. Jumping out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back outscoring Tech in three of the four quarters to come away with a 14-7 win. Chris Acton and Nate Woods led the Saints with two goals apiece while Ryan Mailloux finished the game with thirteen saves.
On Sunday the Saints took to the road to battle Oakland. Shane Lewandowski and Danny Orr gave the Saints the biggest lift, contributing three goals apiece with Chris Acton tossing in two of his own. Mailloux finished the day with seven saves for the undefeated Saints.
Men’s Volleyball
The Saints took part in two contests over the past week, both home stands. On Saturday the Saints held Senior night against Saint Xavier and opened with an electric 26-24 win in set one. After set one success, they looked to capitalize again on their defensive scheme and rotations but were unsuccessful, dropping the next three and losing 4-1. Tyler Hubbard finished with 16 kills and 11 digs for the Saints while Lance Blough added nine kills.
Tuesday night the Saints hosted 10th-ranked Lourdes at home. In set one, the Saints were shaky and mental lapses troubled them throughout with untimed returns lack of cour communication. After dropping set one, the Saints took advantage of their mistakes and corrected them, opening with a 7-3 lead in set two. Lourdes came back to lead it 17-11 before not allowing the Saints to get any closer and winning set two 25-14. The Saints fought hard to gain a sizeable lead in set three with their serving and defense from Max Field and Lance Blough with their timely blocks on Lourdes. Leading it 13-6 once again Lourdes responded, reeling off returns and kills of their own to pull ahead and finish set three 25-20 and winning in straight sets.
Cheer
Last weekend the Saints Cheer team traveled to the NAIA Invitational for the second straight year to compete for supremacy. After seeding 12th in the prelims the day before, the Saints improved their performance score to 76.37 in the finals but were unable to move closer in the rankings coming away with a 12th place finish. Oklahoma City was the eventual champ with a score of 90.45 in the finals.
Dance
The Saints traveled to compete in the NAIA INvitational as well last week in hopes of improving on their success. After day one of the prelims in which the Saints received a sixth place seeding with a score of 94.85 the Saints were up to surpassing it to move up. While the Saints did surpass their previous score to a 98.33, they were unable to solidify a spot in the top five, dropping to eighth place in the finals. Saint Ambrose went away champs with a score of 109.83 in the finals.
Women’s Lacrosse
Last week the Saints held two matches and squared off first against Indiana Tech. trailing 9-2 at the end of the first half, the Saints needed a huge surge to get back in it, one surge they received. In the second half the Saints reeled off 10 goals in hopes of closing the gap, but gave up nine to fall short of the comeback 19-11. Aliisa Mason led the Saints with four goals with three others chipping in two apiece.
Saturday the Saints held their own in a thriller of a game against Aquinas at home. In the first half the Saints matched the visitors score for score to head into the second half tied at six apiece. The second half was more of the same with the teams each scoring seven goal to even them up at 13. In period one of OT Aquinas drew first blood but the Saints had answers for it scoring a tying goal in the second period and taking the lead in the final stanza. Madison Sabourin led the Saints with five goals including the game winner in the final OT period while Aliisa Mason added four goals for the Saints.
