Saints Sports Roundup: Feb. 17-24

Men’s Basketball

The Saints had two contests last weekend, wrapping up the regular season splitting games between Lawrence Tech and Aquinas. Wednesday night the Saints took on Lawrence Tech at SHU Fieldhouse and scoring was in abundance in the first half. Both teams shot over 50 percent from deep and combined for 87 first half points. Down by one at the end of the half, the Saints continued their hot shooting streak putting up 12 straight points to break a 62-all tie between them and keeping the lead for the remainder. The Saints got incredible performances from George Goodman and Christian Covile, scoring 22 and 20 points for the Saints respectively.

Sunday the Saints took on Aquinas in their regular season finale on the road and found themselves in early trouble. Trailing 34-15 at the end of the first half in part due to their shooting 6-25 from the field while allowing the hosts to shoot over 53 percent. In the second half, the Saints more than doubled their scoring output in the first but Aquinas lost little steam winning the second half score 40-36 and going away with a 74-51 win over the Saints. The Saints now prepare for the WHAC tournament and their match against top-seeded Davenport on Thursday on the road.

Women’s Basketball

The Saints took on Lawrence Tech and Aquinas last week, coming away victorious in both contests to finish out the regular season. Wednesday the Saints hosted Lawrence Tech and held control for the majority of the first half leading by as many as nine. The visitors charged back with a 13-2 run and an eventual 34-32 lead at the end of the first half. Midway through the second stanza, the Saints trailed 45-43 before exploding with a 20-3 stretch which kept them ahead for the remainder. Sierra Calhoun led the way with 21 points while Najee Brazzle and Eboney Harvey contributed 12 and 10 points to the win.

Sunday the Saints traveled to Aquinas to finish the regular season out. Although the Saints came away with a first half 32-30 lead, there were 10 lead changes as a result of the shooting strokes of both teams going above 43 percent. The second half was much of the same with 10 more lead changes and the Saints holding a lead of as many as five midway through the second half. With 57 seconds left and trailing 60-59 after an answer from Aquinas, Kenzie Tomasik made the go-ahead and-one but and the Saints came away with a 61-60 win over Aquinas to finish the season. The Saints will look toward a quick rematch this Wednesday in the WHAC tournament quarterfinal at the Fieldhouse.

Men’s Track

Last week the Saints competed in the WHAC Indoor Championships and placed runner-up. The Saints scored a team total of 114 points behind only Indiana Tech and got first places finishes in the 3,000 meter run, pole vault, and shot put from Samuel Parlette, Richard DePalma, and Logan Gray. Along with these, the Saints received a number of runner-up finishes in events five to be exact from Parlette (Mile), Gerald Richardson (High jump), Ej Daffin (Triple jump), Frederick Boyd (60 hurdles), and Dominic Muessig (800). Both 4×8 and 4×4 relay teams finished third to help round out the top performers for the Saints.

Women’s Track

The Saints participated in the WHAC Indoor Championships last weekend, placing fourth with a point total of 87. Top performers included Rebecca Cousineau (Weight throw), Marissa Johnson (High jump), and the 4×8 relay team of Arika Knannlein, Brianna Pekel, Ashley Russo, and Mariah Ridal. Cousineau recorded a distance of 56’ 3 ¾”, over 11 inches better than her previous auto, while Marissa Johnson outlasted fellow teammate Phoenix Duncan to win the tiebreaker for high jump allowing the Saints to finish 1-2 in the event. The McKinley twins took second and third place in pole vault with a height of  12’ ¾” with Sheila beating Tasha in the tiebreaker. Brianna Pekel also took third in the 600 with a time 1:37.55 while Knannlein took runner-up in the 800 with a time of 2:19.32.

Women’s Lacrosse

The Saints opened their regular season last weekend on the road against Lawrence Tech. In the first half the Saints were off to a strong start responding to the first two score of Lawrence Tech but began to trail off slowly ended the half in a 9-5 hole. Although the second half was more on point, scoring seven points, they allowed the hosts to reel off eight ending in a 17-12 loss to open the season. Erin Kehn led the Saints with four points while Aliisa Mason and Sabrina Snow added two points apiece respectively. The Saints next take on Alderson-Broaddus on the road.
