Men’s Basketball

The Saints had a rough outing last week, dropping both games after coming off an impressive win Jan. 5 against crosstown rival Adrian College. Madonna beat the Saints 81-72 Jan. 7 at home.. The Saints kept it close and had chances for a final surge, but ran out of gas towards the end Christian Covile had 26 points, followed by sixth man Stone Beckwith, who finished with 13 to lead the scoring.

On Jan. 10, the Saints took on Lourdes were outscored in both halves in a 56-40 loss. The Saints shot 31 percent for the contest. George Goodman played a team-high 35 minutes and led the team with 13.

 

Sitting at 7-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play, the Saints look to right the ship this week at Lawrence Tech Wednesday and and host Northwestern Ohio Saturday.

 

Women’s Basketball

The 11th-ranked Saints had a 1-1 record this past week, falling at home to Madonna 63-56 but rebounded nicely at Lourdes on Saturday, winning 86-63. On Jan. 7, the Saints trailed at the end of the first half 26-18, but made a statement in fighting back, winning the second half 38-37. It wasn’t enough, however. They were led by Kenzie Tomasik with a double-double 17 points and a game-high 11 boards, followed by Sierra Calhoun and Alexxis Knannlein with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

On Jan. 10, the Saints traveled to Lourdes and got back to their winning formula. Winning both halves and never trailing, SHU looked poised and relentless, shooting over 50 percent from the field, including 55 percent from beyond the 3-point line. Led by playmaker Morgan Warfield with 20 points, the Saints had a total of four in double-figures scoring and improved their road record to an impressive 6-1.

The Saints travel to Lawrence Tech Wednesday and host Northwestern Ohio Saturday.

Side notes: Morgan Warfield is closing in on 300 career 3-pointers made, and by all accounts may top that mark this week. She already holds the record for triples in a career at SHU. Sierra Calhoun is inching to becoming the record-holder for free throws made, needing just 11 to break the current mark of 367..

Men’ Track and Field

The Saints put on a showing at this past weekend’s Hillsdale Winter Opener, led by three autos and four provisionals. EJ Daffin and Richard DePalma were individual winners in the high jump and pole vault, along with Paul Jacobs (weight throw), Frederick Boyd (60 hurdles), Samuel Parlette (mile), and Dominic Muessig (600). Along with these individual winners, the team got a win from their 4×400 relay team with a time of 3:27.02 (a full list of times and stats can be seen below). The Saints travel to Grand Rapids on Friday to compete at the Aquinas Quad meet.

Women’s Track

The Saints also competed at the Hillsdale Winter Opener and recorded six individual wins with an outstanding six auto qualifiers. Led by Kasey Renshaw with a school-record shot put throw of 45 feet 10 inches, as well as a win and auto status in the weight throw with a distance of 61’-5 ¾”. The Saints also got monster performances from Phoenix Duncan, Brianna Pekel, Arika Knannlein, Marissa Johnson, Mariah Ridel, Jalesia Johnson, Sheila McKinley and Stephanie Marquardt. Duncan won high jump with an auto height of 5’7 ¼”, while Marissa Johnson jumped 5’5” to take second and hit auto status. Brianna Pekel won the 600 with a time of 1:38.99, and Arika took the 800 in 2:25.13. Sheila McKinley took second in Pole Vault with an auto jump of 11’ 7 ¾” and lost to Alexandra Whitford from Hillsdale in a tiebreaker jump-off (a list of winners and autos are listed below). Next up is the Aquinas Quad in Grand Rapids on Friday.
